The wanderer of the Mark
Between 1862 and 1889 the Wanderings through the Mark Brandenburg appeared, five volumes about a landscape hardly anyone had described before. Fontane went on foot, talked to fishermen, foresters and pastors and turned Brandenburg into literature.
The Schorfheide with its lakes and hunting grounds is among the landscapes he knew. Whoever walks the circular trail around the Werbellinsee today walks through Fontane country: pines, beeches, water, open space.
The portrait in the logo
The logo of the house shows Fontane’s head as a steel engraving in gold next to the lettering in his handwriting. This look also shapes the new website: the headline typeface is a Bodoni, as printed in Fontane’s day.
Fontane in the restaurant
Theodors carries his first name. On the walls and on the menus are his lines about food, pleasure and imagination.
- “Enjoy with imagination! All pleasures are ultimately imagination. Whoever has the best imagination has the greatest pleasure.”
- “I cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if I have not dined well.”
- “When one has the choice between oysters and champagne, one usually decides on both.”
Frequently asked questions
Did Theodor Fontane live on the Werbellinsee?
No. Fontane lived in Berlin and Neuruppin and travelled the Mark Brandenburg. The name of the house honours the writer who made the landscape around the lake known in literature.
