What a biosphere reserve is
Unlike a national park, a biosphere reserve protects not only nature but a cultural landscape in which people live and work. Schorfheide-Chorin has held the UNESCO title since 1990.
Old beech forests, pine heaths, moors and more than 200 lakes form a landscape that is home to white-tailed eagles, ospreys, cranes and beavers. The Werbellinsee is its largest lake.
From the hotel
The circular trail around the lake leads through the reserve, to the Askanierturm, to Joachimsthal, to Hubertusstock hunting lodge. Rental bikes are available at the boat hire next door, maps at reception.
- Askanierturm: view over the whole lake, on foot from the hotel
- Hubertusstock hunting lodge: on the western shore, via the circular trail
- Chorin Abbey: brick Gothic and summer concerts, 25 minutes by car
- Schorfheide Wildlife Park: wolves, bison, Przewalski’s horses, 20 minutes
- Niederfinow boat lift: 35 minutes
What that means for the house
A hotel in a biosphere reserve carries responsibility for what it shows. The new website of the Fontane Hotel is therefore built light, the kitchen cooks regionally, the boats next door are rowing and pedal boats.
